What Causes Toothaches?

Tooth decay is the primary cause of severe toothaches. Other causes of toothaches include the following: an abnormal bite, tooth eruption, grinding teeth, tooth trauma, infection, or gum disease. You may be experiencing discomfort that resembles a toothache. Common causes for discomfort include: sinus infection, tension in the facial muscles, TMJ, ear infection, or TMD.
How Can I Temporarily Relieve Toothache Pain?

In order to temporarily alleviate pain and inflammation from a toothache, the following may help: rinse with warm salt water, gently floss teeth to dislodge food particles trapped in between teeth, take over-the-counter pain relievers, and apply an over-the-counter antiseptic (containing benzocaine) onto the irritated tooth and gum.
How Can a Dentist Help Me?

Our dentist will complete a comprehensive exam in order to identify the location and cause of the toothache. We will look for any signs of redness, swelling or obvious tooth damage. If necessary, we will take x-rays in order to find any evidence of the following: tooth decay between teeth, a disorder of the underlying bone, or a cracked/impacted tooth. Once we have identified the source of the toothache, we will determine how to properly treat the tooth. Dependent upon the severity of your toothache, this may require removal of the tooth or a root canal procedure.
