Why Did My Filling or Crown Fall Out?

Fillings and crowns can become loose for a wide variety of reasons. One of the most common reasons a filling or crown may become loose is as a result of the decay underneath it. This decay destroys part of the tooth and causes the crown or filling to lose its tight grip on your tooth.
What Can I Do Before My Dentist Appointment?

Apply clove oil to the sensitive area to try to temporarily relieve your pain. If you still have the crown, clean the inside of the crown and coat it with tooth cement, petroleum jelly, or denture adhesive. Next, slip the crown back over your tooth. While this is not a permanent solution, your crown will be held in place until you can visit our dentist. If you’ve lost your filling or crown, apply dental cement directly onto the surface of your tooth in order to temporarily protect and seal the area.
How Can a Dentist Remedy the Situation?

If you have lost a filling or crown as a result of decay, the shape of your tooth has likely changed. As such, we will prepare your tooth again to ensure the new crown fits tightly and properly. If you have lost a filling, we will remove the decay and place a new filling in its place.
