When articles of food or foreign materials become trapped in the spaces between your teeth and gums, bacteria will spread and cause inflammation and infection. What Are Symptoms of an Abscess?

The most common signs indicating you have an abscess in your tooth or gums include: intense throbbing pain, pain that spreads to your ear/jaw/neck on the same side as the infection, pain that increases when you lay down, redness/swelling in your face, bright red or swollen gums, sensitivity to temperatures, consistent bad breath and unpleasant tastes in your mouth.
How Can I Relieve Pain Caused by an Abscess?

If you have an abscess, it is imperative that you seek immediate treatment. However, if you would like to seek temporary pain relief we encourage you to do the following: avoid hot/cold foods, avoid hot/cold drinks, chew soft foods on the non-infected side of your mouth, use a soft toothbrush, and avoid flossing around the affected tooth.
How Are Abscesses Treated?

In order to properly treat a dental abscess, the source of the infection must be removed and the pus must be drained. Dependent upon the location and severity of the abscess, possible treatments may include the following: extraction of the affected tooth, root canal treatment, or incision and drainage.
